Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist by Judith Heumann, Kristin Joiner

emotional informative medium-paced

5.0

This memoir is so informative regarding the disability rights movement. Judith does an amazing job at depicting the reality that so many individuals with disabilities face every day prior to section 504, as well as prior to the ADA. She also discusses advocacy post the ADA.

I really enjoyed this memoir because it brought a personable perspective to the Americans Disabilities Act as well section 504. Prior to reading this book I wrote a 10 page paper for my bachelor in social work regarding the ADA so I have some background knowledge prior to reading this book. However, this book brought so much clarity, and I felt was more informative than many of the articles I read for that paper.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking to diversify your TBR, want to learn more about the disability community, or want to know more about the civil rights of individuals with disabilities.
