Home Body by Rupi Kaur
2.0
Even though I’ve read her previous two collections as well, I was not a big fan of Home Body. Perhaps I have just grown tired of her style, which I initially found refreshing. But more so, I just find each new collection a little more uninspired. I feel like they have become less personal, and more based on themes that are currently dissected on social media (in this case hustle culture and BLM, for instance). Although I of course believe that they are important topics to discuss, I feel like Kaur’s writing style is ill suited for this. Her poems are generally short and simple, which is great, but it is difficult to discuss such complex things in a way that they deserve using this style. Moreover, I didn’t find them especially reflective or innovative, and I felt she not only recycled themes, but also specific ideas, from her previous collections. To be honest, I’m not sure if I’ll read anything new she publishes.
