Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
4.0
Despite finding the two main characters (and several of the secondaries) abhorrent, I was totally compelled by this book. It's one epic train wreck chronicled over three generations, and I couldn't take my eyes off of it.
Emily Brontë's writing is surprisingly clear and readable, despite all the jumps she makes in narrators and the disjointed stretches of dialogue. I had no trouble keeping track of all the Earnshaws, Lintons, and Catherines. The novel is rich with layers I didn't bother to analyze intellectually as I was reading, because they are so effective in context. I'm sure I'll have fun deconstructing things in my head once I'm over the shock of it ending - of all that misery coming to a halt.
Whew. What an experience.
