This book was essentially a knock-off alien version of any dystopian novel in the 2010's. The plot was formulaic and thus, boring. I realized this a third of the way through the book. It also just was unrealistic. The drive for the aliens to not kill every human didn't make sense. It's also weird that the aliens are existing as only consciousness but they need a planet to live on? It didn't make sense for a supposedly "logical" alien species. It almost felt more that the alien species was toying with humans. Yancey also is a man, and it shows in his writing. He doesn't write believable women characters. Every female character seemed harsh, brutal, and talks like a man, even the 7-year old. It really took me out of the book. The rest of the writing was something I would see in $1 paperbacks from the grocery store. Disappointing, ultimately unbelievable, and I would not read again.
