Demon Slayer Complete Box Set: Volumes 1-23 with Premium by Koyoharu Gotouge

4.0

i started reading this so i could understand what the hell my twitter timeline was talking about and also i told someone three years ago i'd pick it up, and it was really good! it demands you keep on reading and the action and fight scenes are good and well-drawn (though, on a couple of occasions perhaps too short?) and i feel SUCH strong affection for so many of the characters.

the story's premise is interesting and the overall story is extremely good. i really liked all of the characters and i appreciated tanjiro's entire disposition, like! i love a dumb of ass, pure of heart protag! that's the backbone of shonen!!! i took awhile to warm up to zenitsu because while i usually really enjoy a cowardly character, i do not always love the perv in a series—i am historically more amenable if the character has depth to them (see: sanji, jiraiya) and it took me a little longer than usual to find that in him, but i liked him a lot more in the end than i would've predicted during his introduction, and i did appreciate that all the characters in-universe thought he needed to cut that shit out.

still, i do think this could've benefited from another 100-200 chapters because there were multiple times where i felt that arcs just moved too fast or i wish we'd spent more time with certain characters.
like the mugen train arc, which moved to fast for me to be properly hit by rengoku's death, even though the obvious impact of it throughout the series adds to it, so i wonder if i'll feel differently upon re-read, or the final arc which is almost half of the series but could've easily gone on longer—i think the the final three twelve kizuki could've had their own arcs, i guess, especially doma and akaza.
still, despite all of the things i could nitpick about how i personally felt about the pacing by the end i had either teared up or cried multiple times soooooo shonen remains undefeated from laying me out emotionally, i guess.

also, i really loved the little faces that gotuge drew when the characters were being silly it is SO endearing.
