Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill

I'm sold. I picked this up in the comic shop a couple of times and put it back down because the graphic style just doesn't suit me. But I'd heard rave reviews so when the first volume showed up in my library, I took the chance and I'm so glad I did.

Primarily I'd say that this is not a pretty comic. It's gruesome. Not just in how things are visually presented or in the story itself, although those things are true too, but the drawing style and the expressions of the characters are very real, very disturbing and heady. Even though the style makes me want to cringe, it is a perfect addition to a compelling story.

Each chapter adds a little more back story and about a dozen questions to what will likely become a complex and multifaceted tale. It's kind of like a train wreck, in that best possible, can't turn away, don't really want to know, but must continue sort of way.

Highly recommend. I'm super curious to follow this one down the rabbit hole.
