The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski

5.0

4.5 stars to rounding up to a 5.

It was a midnight lie, she said.

A kind of lie told for someone else's sake, a lie that sits between goodness and wrong, just as midnight is the moment between night and morning.

The contents of the book are just as beautiful and entrancing as the cover. The story unravels in the most exquisite way while exploring emotional and physical abuse from both a parental figure and lover. It was compelling without being too complex. Each sentence felt delicately strung together to allow the reader to almost experience the moments of decadence and grime.

The romance was a delicious blend of angst and slow burn with a dash of sweetness. The amount of secret yearning is something I've come to expect and love from Marie's books.

I loved the little references to characters and events in The Winner's Trilogy which might make me a little biased since I hold so much love for that story but I absolutely cannot wait for the next book.
