The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5.0

5 stars. i grew up in the era of YA-explosion, with series like THG and Divergent being among the most popular books in the school reading circles. as an adult, i revisited Collins' work and was astonished at how well it holds up in comparison to some other popular series around the same time, which in hindsight feel very silly.

The Hunger Games paints a bleak story that only gets darker the more time you invest into it -- and with the more knowledge and maturity you approach the subject matter with. things and scenes that disturbed me as a teen but i simply moved past from as an adult now affect me deeply, as the sheer drastic weight of Panem as a nation and those who have been burnt and sacrificed in its construction, creation, and maintenance. telling this in-depth lore and worldbuilding through a character like Katniss, who is both firm in her sense of self and morality, and develops throughout the series as she comes to understand more of the world around her and the greater politics at play, is simply genius. also finnick still hurts me deeply
