Manxmouse by Paul Gallico

The opening chapter is wonderful. Each subsequent one is a self-contained story, capped by a final pair that are quite thrilling.
It lags a bit in the middle, and the self-contained aspect of the chapters hurts its cohesion (as does the rapid-paced travel across Britain), but it was a nice bit of story all the same.
