I'm very biased by nostalgia, but I love this story of a girl finding/creating a home and family while learning that she has animal magic, with callbacks to many endearing characters from Pierce's previous quartet.
Also, having read about how the first quarter was edited/came to be from (what was originally) a single adult novel, I would argue this book is a bit more evenly paced and answers questions it sets up but also sets the stage for the overarching quartet's conflicts.
