I shouldn't be rating this now because I know very well that I would have given at least four stars if I had finished this book the first time I picked it up as a high schooler.
The story and the setting are really good, but I just couldn't bother listening to the 18 year old protagonist's monologues about metaphors every two chapters. Even worse than that was the awkward censoring of curse words that had every character, including a middle aged man, yell "sparks" whenever something didn't go according to plan.
Every time the story slowed down a bit I lost interest because the writing couldn't keep up. The dialogues got annoying, the characters were cliched and had no personalities other than "drinking coke" or "making up facts about Scotland", and my mind kept wandering to all the other books I could be reading instead..
