A nice and short little gothic novel with plenty of that good old terror and horror the genre is known for. My only major complaint is that Beckford seemed to always pull his punches. Whenever an innocent is about to suffer, he contrives some deus ex machina to spare the readers.

While not as well written, if you liked the Castle of Otronto you will probably like Vathek.
