The Failed Cities by Matt Wallace

5.0

An absolutely gripping work; within two pages, I knew I'd done the right thing in treating myself to this special edition.

Each of the characters is beautifully written, full of flaws and hopes, virtues and idiosyncrasies -- none of which ever feels forced. These are real people, the perhaps-difficult-to-love but easy-to-embrace inhabitants of a cataclysmic alternate future. And it's their stories, their fully realised voices, that drive the interwoven plot, that make the reader care a little too deeply.

I blew through The Failed Cities in two sittings and can't wait to revisit Ethan, the Feral Twins, d'Anger, Truck, the Maven, Sterne and Klimenko. Right after I nick the book back from my husband.
