Blood, by Marjorie Liu

5.0

Beautiful, dark, violent, and surprisingly cute at times, it's hard to not get drawn into the world of Monstress. The dichotomy between Lovecraftian horror monsters, cannibalism, and super cute SD fox children, and two-tailed cats with the most adorable grump expressions are amazing.

The only drawback is that the world and politics are pretty deep. For example, each chapter ends with a page featuring a four tailed cat teaching kittens about the lore of the world. Deep. So the months between reading volume one and volume two have resulted in me forgetting a lot of what happens in the first part. Just how it goes sometimes.

Did I mention that the cats are necromancers called nekomancers (neko is the Japanese word for cat).

Also cool is that the writer and author are both women of color, so this series really has the complete package. Unless you're turned off by viscera and violence, I'd say give this series a try.
