Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo

5.0

Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo follows the story of a fictional animal kingdom called Jidada ruled by an evil regime for over 40 years. Jidada's president or known as the Father of the Nation, the Old Horse was thrown through a coup by his own party (Party of Power) and was replaced by the Saviour of the Nation, the strong old horse known as Tuvy.

The Old Horse and his wife, the donkey (the Sweet Mother) hide somewhere while other animals were celebrating. Unfortunately, the animals in Jidada were still trapped in a cycle of wicked dictatorship and suffered in absolute power.

The goat on the cover signifies the main narrator, Destiny who returned to her hometown and the red butterflies signifies the title of Destiny's latest book launched in Jidada.

The animals in the story behave like normal people in the 21st century, which makes it easier for me to understand the whole situation. Told and inspired by Orwell's Animal Farm, Glory is a blazing read with strong political satire of Zimbabwe with vivid depictions of callous governance, coup, Gukurahundi genocide, and corrupt leaders. I do some search and learn a lot about Zimbabwe's political issues.

I also do enjoy the unspeakable horror scenes from Glory; reminisce of the downfall of the corrupt government (wholesome memory) through the fair elections

A must-read read if you are a fan of Animal Farm.
