Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Club: Roll Call by Xanthe Bouma
4.0
This was a great story about finding your place in middle school, being open to other people, and moving past mistakes you’ve made. There is a stereotypical mean girl bully, but the other people have more depth. The art was engaging and easy to follow, and the books does well as a stand alone or an entry into a series.
There are several references to other people's assumptions about the characters' sexuality or gender expression. The characters neither confirm nor deny these declarations. I actually found it realistic and positive that these particular middle schoolers might not be ready to put themselves in anyone's box at this moment. You do you.
Mild spoiler:
I also liked that the librarian was a stealth ally rather than a mean shush-er. It would have been even better if she had actually reported the bully to the principal….
