One Child by Torey Hayden

5.0

I like Torey Hayden’s books and this is my favorite. Not just because of Sheila, the “one child,” but also the other children in that classroom, and its portrayal of what it’s like to work with emotionally disturbed children. I thought it was very honest about showing the frustration of trying to improve these children’s lives while they’re helplessly living with parents or others who act counterproductively toward these efforts; it certainly mirrored my experiences working with emotionally disturbed special ed kids.
