Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean

I was so excited about this book because it had an awesome premise and JAPAN, but I’m sorry to say that it fell way short of its potential.

The story started out pretty good, though slow. However, as I read on, I found myself caring less and less. As others have mentioned, the pacing was terrible. The beginning is too long, and the rest too short. Characters change and fall in love much too quickly (how does someone master a weapon and overcome their cowardice in like two days??).

The character development itself was also lacking. By the end of the book, everything had devolved into childish and ridiculous caricatures of what should’ve been a serious plot. I kept rolling my eyes at the melodramatics of it all.

I’m almost glad there’s no sequel.
