First Earth by Cami Murdock Jensen

3.0

I'm going to preface by saying that I am not the demographic for this book, and that greatly impacted my enjoyment of it. I think overall, I would have enjoyed this book quite a lot in my early tweens. But now, unfortunately not as much.

There is nothing inherently bad about this book, in fact there were quite a lot of great things. I think the concepts are phenomenal. I love the concept of the various earths, magic types/roles, demonic and light powers, dragons, cats, and of course I really liked the MC's potential.
I think the reason I didn't love this book was really just the mediocre execution of these great concepts and characters. The world building was awkward, and all of the characters felt so close to being loveable, but just fell short. (Although I did quite love Grimmal and Dominiath.)

All of that to say, I think this is a great book for tweens, especially as a gateway story to sci-fi and fantasy genres. If you know a tween who needs an entertaining, fast paced, and intriguing book to push them into reading, I would 100% recommend this.
