I absolutely loved this book. No notes, no criticisms. After the cat & mouse duet and Sibby’s prequel, I was readily expecting to be traumatised or emotionally destroyed by this novella but the overall tone was inspiring honestly. I didn’t know H.D. Carlton did heartwarming but this damn well warmed my heart.
Something about reading the triggering shit as a flashback or recollection of the past made it so much easier to process. There were no sickening heart-in-mouth, stomach-dropped-out-of-ass moments. There were definitely references to dark, messed up and traumatic experiences but knowing Molly had lived to tell the tale was really comforting. It gave me permission to relive the flashbacks through the lens of her being a badass survivor and not a victim potentially about to break. There were also no explicit descriptions of the sexual abuse she suffered, just the lasting effects they had on her emotionally while she was learning to overcome them and live again.
I won’t lie, I was suspicious as hell of her love story with Cage. Don’t get me wrong, he ticks all the boxes for a morally grey leading man, they were adorable together and it was everything she deserved but I had trust issues that H.D. was going to give me whiplash with a twist at any moment. That feeling followed me right up until I’d turned the very last page. I have never been more relieved and grateful things turned out the way they did.
I have so many questions about Legion. I really hope it’s Sibby and her Henchman/Kraven, so I’m going to cling to that belief until we find out otherwise. The extended epilogue has definitely got my appetite going for the next instalment in this story too. I hope we get to see all the players we’re invested in work together and interact, including Molly & Cage, Rio, the brotherhood, Z & Addie and Sibby with her men.
