I Hope This Doesn't Find You by Ann Liang

4.0

"I Hope This Doesn't Find You" perfectly found me.

Honestly, this review may not be that interesting for you. I hope it is, but it's really more for me.

Which is actually perfectly in sync with this book's message!! :D

Meet Sadie Wen, our academic superstar, eyes-on-the-prize kinda lead. Who also likes to lie to herself (who doesn't?) and oh, she is clearly on the verge of a meltdown but who has time for one, am I right?

In many ways, I'm quite different from Sadie. For one, I'm about a decade older than her. Two, I lived in a home where both my parents were present, and blessedly, brought in decent incomes that taught me life wasn't just about work, nor would I need to provide for them. And three, I never had an academic rival whose hands I obsessed over (though I'd like to think if I did, I'd have done far better in school).

So imagine my surprise when I found myself relating to her, seeing so much of myself in Sadie in all the ways I'm trying to get better at. This line of Sadie's really captures me as a person:

"As someone who's a strong advocate of saving up just in case a comet crashes into our house and insurance refuses to cover it..."

I tend to say yes a lot. I tend to care a bit too much of how others think of me. I tend to spiral at the thought I may have hurt someone (even when I know that person wouldn't even think about me a moment more). I worry. About money. About my future. About everything.

And we all do. I know that. It's not like I've never come across a character with similarities to Sadie or to me. But, Ann Liang's writing is a testament to how this particular girl, this character in a book, ended up resonating with me deeply, and reminding me I have a lot of work still left as I try to tackle life with a little less stress, being a little less practical, and standing up for myself a bit more.

And if you are the exact opposite of a person, I promise, you'll still like this book.

My only complaint? I wanted to see more of Sadie and Julius as they navigate their relationship!
