informative medium-paced

5.0

|Synopsis| A look at how 50% of the population is ignored.

“In the US, it is a truth universally acknowledged that its soccer team has never won the World Cup or even reached the final - except that it has. It’s women’s team has won 4 times”

“When we exclude half of humanity from the production of knowledge we lose out on potentially transformative insight.”

A super interesting read and insight into the data gap in our world. It covers a range of areas in society (healthcare, car design, entertainment) where due to a lack of data, women are not accounted for, often resulting in negative outcomes not just for women but for all of society.

This was such a fascinating read that I think everyone should pick it up! Findings are supported by multiple studies and is very eye opening.

Found a number of insights that are very eye opening, although it might make you a little angry at time that there are so many examples of the data gap in the world.

One of the interesting anecdotes to come from the book is on the failure of car safety tests to account for women in the driver's seat (or really in the passenger seat for that matter).

Women generally are ‘out of position’ drivers which leads to greater risk of injury in crashes.
Cars have been designed using car-crash test dummies based on the ‘average’ male which then leads to a lack of data on the safety of cars for half of the population.
