Okay, the people were right about this one. The twist was shattering and so was the rest of the book. Evelyn is a complicated, almost entirely selfish woman who is not painted as a black and white villain. Shades of gray run rampant throughout the book: Every character is complicated and imperfect and thoroughly fleshed out. The book explores the nature and importance of relationships and the choices that make and break them.
