Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries by Eva Mendes

fast-paced

5.0

5⭐️ for the book itself
3 ⭐️ for the audition narration.

I am thankful to have gotten the  AudioARC for free from Netgalley and Macmillan Audio so I can leave my voluntary review.

With an adult book I would have used the narration rating as my overall rating. However I rate Chrildrens books differently. So even though my duty was to review the audio book, I’m not going to rank the over rating as it’s a good book.

First for the good. While I didn’t get to see the illustrations except for the cover art, if the cover is art is any indication the art is wonderful and fun.
I enjoyed that the book is published in both English and Spanish and in the English version she does use some phrases in Spanish and the characters are as well. I love the representation as well.

I also love the symbolism of using a monster to describe anxiety and the mother helping her children through it rather than excusing it away.
It’s a great book for any small child’s library, especially those dealing with anxiety in general or at bedtime/ afraid of the dark.

Now for the narration… it is narrated by the books author Eva Mendez, the actress. You would expect something fabulous and well, it wasn’t. She read very flat and. It engaging at all. Picture books are hard in audio books since they aren’t accessible books where they describe the illustrations so you miss so much. While it was produced with some light sound effects it just doesn’t have the polish that audiobooks typically have. Even the voice recording sounded off like it wasn’t done in a sound booth.

Anyway, I recommend the book 100% although the language it more fitting with kids in at least 2nd grade and up. I do not recommend the audiobook unless you absolutely need it.

My rating system for Middle Grade and children’s books

⭐️ Significant problems and would never recommend to the audience.
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea but may have some appeal.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ an ok book which I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend but it has some value for young readers
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! I would recommend for the age or reading level appropriate for the book
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Would recommend highly, especially to school programs as a wide spread reading opportunity.
