Milk Blood Heat by Dantiel W. Moniz
4.0
By pure coincidence, this is the second collection of short stories I read in January. I usually find I’m not a huge lover of them, but I really enjoyed Milk Blood Heat.
Moniz writes such beautiful, lyrical prose about humanity, darkness, religion, love, growth, lies, and blood (sometimes metaphorically, other times actual blood). And of course milk and heat. Duh.
Each story has a dark twist, and they all end in such a way that the reader is not given any real resolution. I feel like there’s a lot of power in this though, especially with short stories, as it leaves you hanging on and wanting more. I sometimes had to pause to go back and listen again, wanting to relive the weight of the last few sentences.
There was something in each story which struck a chord somehow; a sense of unease permeating throughout. My favourite was “Exotics”, a very short but not so sweet story about a restaurant where wealthy customers eat exotic animals. I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I really felt that last line. And also immediately Googled to see what it meant, and then listened to the line again to make sure.
If you like a short story collection, I highly recommend this. If you’re like me and aren’t a huge fan of them, still read this.
