I knew I was going to love this story but I didn’t realise I would love it quite as much. This was a beautiful story of love, pain, grief, belonging and loss. The world building was superb and drew me in fueling my desperation to know more. I could not stop reading. I fell in love with Elspeth and Rayven almost instantly, whilst they felt they were enemies to start you could feel the chemistry instantaneously.
This is a fantasy novel where their world is being taken over by a magical mist, infecting people with magic. The only sanctioned magic are the providence cards, although there is 1 card that has been missing for 500 years, and only finding that card can complete the deck and save them all. I had never read a premise quite like it and found it easy to follow and very individual.
I am so grateful I had an ARC for book 2, Two Twisted Crowns, as the ending of this book broke me, and I needed to know what happened next.
I cannot speak highly enough about this story and how much I loved, and hated the characters! Rachel does a fantastic job of writing good vs evil and the feelings that evokes within a reader. I highly recommend this fanasty read, but be prepared to fall in love!
