I hesitated initially to pick up at first simply due to its length. Although there is no denying this is a bit of a tome, and even after 800 pages, the story continues in a second book, can’t deny I want to know what happens next.

Sort of went into the story blind and was a bit unsure about a story set in high school (as I now measure time since high school closer to decades than years). But something about this story hooked me.

A few small gripes throughout the story:
1. Constant reference to Shannon be so so small. Just felt it was a bit much and unnecessarily repetitive
2. Some observations made by Shannon in relation to Johnny just felt a little to naive. Although, can maybe give her a pass here given what’s she’s been through. Never knew someone to say sorry so many times.

“We were virtual strangers”
You’ve been to his house, to dinner, to the movies…not strangers.

3. Do love Johnny. However, for someone who self proclaims to be calm and collected, he seems to jump straight to physically hurting people when they cross him. A bit of a red flag, considering Shannon’s life experience.

“Flex that famous self control”

“Maybe once I use my fist instead of my words, he’d take me seriously”

4. Referring to a pregnant women as a “human incubator”

In saying that, I enjoyed more about this book than those four main issues. The family dynamic of Shannon (and Johnny for that matter), were tough but kept me wanting to turn the page.

I usually eat every two three hours…”
“You’re on a feeding schedule? Like a baby?”

There were times that I did enjoy the humour within the story. Mainly that was when Gibson was around.

“She makes my heart go whoaaa…boom boom fucken boom”

Some scenes did feel like they went on forever, but there were also some situations that I just loved to see, especially the forced proximity side of things.

There polar opposite reactions their parents have to a newspaper article is just heartbreaking.

A lot of the adults in this story need to sort out their shit and stop taking it out on children.

“Maybe you and Dad will get lucky and he’ll finish me off next time. It’ll save you the worry and him the energy”

Just to round out this review by saying that once again, a story is enhanced by the addition of cute dogs! Humans don’t deserve them.

Johnny stopped at the top of the staircase to scoop up Suki. And then proceeded to carry the huge 80 pound, minimum Labrador down the stairs. Like she was a baby”

Now straight onto book 2 in the duology.

The Boys of Tommen series is comprised of three love stories so far. Books 1 & 2 follow Shannon & Johnny.
