Antimatter Blues by Edward Ashton

4.0

Just once I would like to read a story where our alien overlords are evil giant hamsters or sentient daffodils. Why do they ALWAYS have to be buglike or spiderlike? And why are they both in this novel? WHY?

Ahem.

Anyway, aside from that, I enjoyed this book. Mickey7 is now a retired Expendable who hasn't uploaded in the last two years. He spends his time mostly as a grunt laborer. But after something happens that no one will talk about, the colony is on the verge of dying in a long cold winter. Mickey is ordered to get the bomb back from the native creepers so that the colony can use its fuel for the reactor and get them through the winter. Only Mickey didn't give it to the creepers like (almost) everyone believes. He hid it somewhere "safe" so it shouldn't be a problem to retrieve it..... except that it's not in its hiding place anymore. Time to figure out where it went, how to get it back, and maybe not die or kill the entire colony in the process.
