The form of the novel is unusual but powerful and consistently surprising: told almost like a chorus, Otsuka continuously reinvents the possibilities of the first person plural. It is a haunting book to read today, with the echoes of anti-Japanese prejudice and internment bouncing off the deportations and surveillance of the present.
