The Village of Eight Graves by Seishi Yokomizo

4.0

Yokomizo's plotting is astounding! The Village of Eight Graves is a well-crafted murder mystery with incredible pacing that will leave you scrambling for answers chapter after chapter. The characters were all well fleshed out, the relationships developed organically, and the pervasive atmosphere of terror and mystery really set the tone for the ensuing plot progression.

The only thing I have to nitpick on was how Kindaichi was more of operating behind the scenes (though I certainly loved the narration from the perspective of Tatsuya-our main character) and the revelation towards the end leaned more on exposition and I don't feel necessarily vindicated. It turned the resolution down a notch for me but nevertheless, this was a gripping murder mystery and I'm eternally grateful for Pushkin Vertigo's efforts in publishing more translated works from Yokomizo.

P.S. Finally finished this book after so many months of failed attempts to finish this in one sitting.
