A fairly simple romance story. I didn’t love the overarching conflict, found it annoying and grating after a while, which caused me to drag my feet through the last third
Feels silly to say this about a historical romance, but I don’t love the… traditionalism? Even tho they’re not a traditional relationship, and there’s a lot of diverse points overall, still they were all “our little wife” and “gonna put a baby in you” right away
Also, while they did exchange letters for a year and therefore got to know each other in a way (although, Julie didn’t know she had written Will too) , it still felt very insta-love which I didn’t love
And something else that bugged me was the nature of Forest and Will’s relationship wasn’t clear until the very end. They were referred to as the other’s friend and partner throughout and never showed any affection (physical or emotional) to each other beyond having a strong bond. It wasn’t until the last 30min in the final confrontation when finally Will and Julie are referred to as Forest’s spouses, and Will says he loves Julie and Forest and holds Forest’s hand
