The Mall by S.L. Grey
3.0
This book strikes me as something that would sit right by Joe Lansdale's Drive-In series. They share a similar grotesque absurdity and a turn to social satire. I had a good time with most of it. I am always up for a skewering of consumerist culture and this delivers.
Some of the scenes went by a bit too quickly for my tastes. I don't need lingering detail at every moment, but the major transitions got muffled or swallowed or something. I didn't get lost or anything but it did dampen some of my enjoyment.
There's a fine balance of ick factor with excitement, amusement, and character development. As a bonus, it was quite interesting for this American to read more South African horror.
