The pacing of the book was pretty fast, but I did feel like the start was a little slow.  I enjoyed the journey of the book and I think the story was unique and well-developed.  I would say that my only qualms about it is that it is not extremely well translated.  I think that it is important to have a good translation because I could tell that some phrases and sentences were oddly worded.  In comparison, I read The Thief Lord by the same author and did not find the same oddities in any sentences.  I would also say that there were some very Western/European undercurrents of thought, quietly assuming certain kinds of inferiority of other customs and cultures.  Other than that, I really liked how the twists and turns of the story were there without making it too unbelievable, simple, or stressful.
