Elmet by Fiona Mozley

5.0

This is a beautiful and evocatively written book.

I read the first quarter in fits and starts over weeks, but then the pace launched and I swallowed the remainder within an afternoon.

The way that Mozley immerses the reader into the narrative is raw and unapologetic. Descriptions of nature and the way that Daniel, Cathy and their Daddy inhabit this landscape aligns you with them and their beliefs. What is perceived as unconventional on the surface is instantly made familiar and I felt highly defensive of their lives and the way they chose to set up a sanctuary in the rural North of England.

There are some scenes that I am replaying over and over in my head and I have no doubt that this novel will stand the test of time and be revisited as a pivotal book that captures the lives of marginalised traveller and rural communities.

Absolutely loved it!
