So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

challenging emotional informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

I highly recommend this book to any non-Black person who wants to talk to their loved ones about race-related topics, but you aren't sure how to go about it without stumbling over your words of getting defensive, or even angry. Unfortunately, most of us white people have many actively racist family members and it is OUR responsibility to call them out and reign them in. Ijeoma Oluo does an outstanding job and bringing up subjects and their arguments in a familiar and conversational way. You will not be sorry that you read this!

I picked up this book in the summer of 2020, after reading feedback (as a white woman) that "White Fragility" was not a good source for starting my journey into reading about race relations. SYWTTAB. Is. Amazing. Ijeoma Oluo writes in a frank, conversational way that makes the book itself feel like "talking" to her about the topic of race, systemic racism, and white supremacy in the US. I took my time reading this book, chapter by chapter, with annotations, to make sure that I was absorbing the information and not just breezing through to add a gold star to my list of books. This book will be something that I refer back to in the future, and one that I have gone through the notes to add books to my purchase list for the future!
