Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell

4.5

elizabeth gaskell walked so sally rooney could run.
everybody b dying in this book!
i also love that so much happens off-screen, so to speak. specifically, the wedding/marriage/most of the confession of mary to jem. very pride and prejudice in that way, but also, that means it evades the storyline of a romance. by skipping the wedding, etc., it emphasizes that the love plot is incidental, not the main gag (which is of course, class struggle). fun stuff! big fan. some nice phrases: "thrilled through," "unbraiding love"
