Murder at The Bookstore by Sue Minix

3.0

Sue Minix is another I hadn’t heard of, but I saw this book when I was having an online book-shopping session last year. The title and the concept of it being about a bookstore and a writer were the reasons I selected it. This was part of my tbr challenge and was chosen by a community member, having selected number 17.

The title and cover were one of the big reasons I picked it up, so I was confused when I read it. With a cat sitting on the chair, I expected a cat wandering around the bookstore. The title states Murder at the Bookstore, so my mind immediately thought of a murder at the bookstore. Unfortunately, neither of these things happened. There was no cat to be seen, and the murder wasn’t at the bookstore.

I found this to be a slow burn. It took me a little while to feel some suspense in the murder mystery. I found most of the action within the story was in the latter third of the book. I had a favourite character, this being the protagonist’s best friend. I would very much like to read a book with her as the main character. Unfortunately, I didn’t warm to the protagonist. Our personalities are those that would clash if we met in real life.

Although I didn’t warm to this book, I will be donating it. I’m not discounting the author. I would consider reading her books in the future. I would even see if I felt differently about the characters in her other books, as this is the first in the series. However, I would pick it up at the library rather than purchase it.
