Coraline is the perfect level of spooky yet adventurous. While comparisons to the movie are almost inevitable, I believe both are fantastic. The book does take a little bit of a different path, however, with the action from the climax of the movie beginning pretty early on. In this sense, it's slightly less mysterious,
the other Mother is quickly revealed to be the villain, for instance
.

From Dave McKean's black and white illustrations to Neil Gaiman's incredible sense of what its like to be a child, Coraline is a short read that is well worth your time. Just be ready for some scaries though. This book is, in a lot of ways, just as terrifying as a horror story written for any adult.
