Ugh, I'm disappointed.

While book one was thoroughly entertaining and hit the ground running, book two is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

For 150 pages, not much happens - they're at a research facility, they're having a bad time, we 'learn' things we already know... and nothing else. There's some new characters that are introduced who are extremely two-dimensional, which wouldn't have been such an issue if this had kept the pace of book one, but unfortunately there's absolutely nothing that drives this story forward. However, I was willing to stick with it for a little longer to see if it would pick up.

But then. Ah, but then. (some mild spoilers ahead, though I've kept it as vague as possible)

We reach a part of the story where one of the female main characters reflects on her attraction to people in the past, describing how she wasn't physically attracted to her ex until she'd known him for years. Would it have ended there, awesome! We love demi representation. But in the very next sentence she describes how she feels a strong, almost desperate physical connection to the boy she's known for a few weeks. This confuses her. And that would've been fine, too, people are allowed to question their sexualities. But given the fact that this is the first time (across two books) that we learn this about her, having it immediately countered, and with the added context of a virus that 'betters' the host?

Nope, I'm out. It might get better further into the book, but it's going into the unhaul pile for me ✌
