The Old Axolotl: Hardware Dreams by Jacek Dukaj

4.0

I picked this up as I heard it was the inspo for Into the Night (one of the best damn shows on Netflix in years) and I’m surprised at how WILDLY different it is!

This story has all the existential hopelessness and giant robots of Evangelion, but with an even more confusing type of storytelling. It’s difficult to tell what is dreaming and what is reality, who is speaking, and whether these are quirks of the writing or of the translation.

I was confused for most of the time but when I did feel lucid I was enamoured by the concepts and questions this posed. Would have been a 3 star, but I really liked where it headed in the end.
