Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping by and Get Your Financial Life Together by Erin Lowry

5.0

If you're like me and have no clue where to start when it comes to being smart with your money, you need this book. I actually read Lowry's second book of this series first, which is all about investing, and I fell in love with her writing, so I picked up this book and the 3rd book immediately. I'm 35 years old, and I got sober from my drug addiction at 27, so I missed a lot of opportunities in my 20s to become financially responsible. Thankfully, there is a book like this that not only shows me that all isn't lost, but I can instill some good habits on my 12-year-old son as he gets a little bit older.

Before this book, I had a fundamental knowledge of credit, but it never made sense, and this book did an excellent job explaining it as well as strategies to manage credit. It also helped me better understand the importance of paying off debt while also saving, and Lowry covers a bunch of topics in-between. Where else are you going to find a book that covers all of this and also gives you tips about being the broke friend when all your buddies want to go out as well as how to have financial conversations with your partner?

I will say that my only concern with this book is that it may only be beneficial to those from an upper-middle-class background. The author was very fortunate to have parents who taught her about money at a young age, which helped her position herself as she got older. But this book reminded me how many people are working full-time with side gigs and barely scraping by. For many people in the United States, a lot of these tips would sound insane as they live paycheck to paycheck, but I still think it's a must-read. Even if you can't do everything in this book, just having a basic knowledge of goals you should be setting can help put you in the right position.
