One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware
2.25
I don’t think I can be more generous than 2.25 stars. This was so bad. I like Ruth ware as an author. Her books are typically closer to 4 stars for me with the occasional 5er. All her books are very quite different though. So I wasn’t that surprised when this one didn’t start off as exciting as Zero Days, for example. As I read, I thought maybe it was going to be slower paced like It Girl (which I really liked) or One by One (which I liked a little less but still solid). Alas, the entire thing just let me down. Page after page.
For starters, it was too much into the reality show drama. For another, it was so dang repetitive. I also didn’t think the inserts in the first two parts added much to the story—but especially not the diary inserts. And then there was nothing in part 3? I feel like some newspaper article inserts or something could have been added.
Then idk. Everything was a little too straight forward. The bad guy was the bag guy. The good guys were the good guys. The realization at the end was very duh. But possibly the most disappointing was some of the things that could have been read as foreshadowing went nowhere (looking at you Zana).
But also, more exciting things happen off page and we’re just told about them in a sentence. Like that’s what you choose to leave out?
I have a lot of respect for Ms Ware. I will absolutely continue to read her books. But I hope no first timers pick this one up. Because if it had been me, I’d be hard pressed to read another RW book again.
Do not recommend.
