The Magician by Michael Scott

2.0

I Wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t.

It had a lot of potential, specifically in the world building. I really liked the mesh of different mythologies and folklores and I wanted to learn more about how the author had combined and changed them.
I also thought the magic was pretty cool, and I wanted to learn more about how it worked and what the limits and specialties were.

But, all of the good things were completely eclipsed by the Horrible writing and characters.

The characters are So bland and one dimensional, especially the two MCs. They have no personality at all, no speaking voice, and there’s no glimpse to interesting inner thoughts. They have the development of side characters. There’s absolutely no reason to like them and no reason that they should be the Special Snowflakes that they are. They’re important just Because.

The writing was really bad, too. There was far too much explanation and far too little explanation at the same time. It would give wordy explanations about scenery and appearances and would explain simple things as if the reader was a complete idiot.
The descriptions were atrocious and so vague. I’m paraphrasing, but it went along the lines of “The sword cut right into So-and-So’s arm. It hurt.”
And No One’s giggle sounds like a purr ?

I wish it were good, but it’s not. Wouldn’t recommend.
