The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

3.0

I am in the special snowflake category again aren't I ft GIFS

So after finishing the last historical, I wanted to pick up something different to keep myself afloat from the reading slump my mind keeps threatening to fall into and I thought, hey, this book was talked about all the goddamn time a couple of months back - why not give it a go?

And give it a go I did.

I didn't necessarily hate it although from this review it might seem like I did. The story follows our main character, whose name I forgot, as she starts competing for a promotion against her arch-nemesis and coworker Justin? Jeremy? Something J? They have not liked each other for quite a while and have been locked in a battle of wills of sorts.

Let's start with what I liked.

The beginning.

I am once again in the minority here because for most of the people who were torn about the book I've found that the beginning is what they had to get through to get to the good shit at the end. Well shoot me in the metaphorical nuts because I found it all to be a little downhill.

I thought the beginning was

The writing, the tension, and my personal favorite the HR game.

I don't know why I found it so funny but lord knows I did.

What I didn't like:

THE MAIN CHARACTER.

Her motherfucking hight

I get it. She's short. I'm sorry but you overestimate how much I give a fuck. STOP REMINDING ME THE FACT THAT SHE'S 5'5 EVERY COUPLE PARAGRAPHS.

Needless to say, I did not vibe.

Lots of people thought our dude J was problematic but honestly, I try as I might I couldn't find what they were referring to. Yeah he did somethings wrong but in comparison to the murderous rage our heroine put me in - he was an angel.

This brings me to the fact that this woman from like 60% onwards annoyed the living shit out of me. Nothing she did or said registered anymore because I was white-knuckling the table trying to breathe through being in her mind.

I started like this

downgraded to this

and ended up here

Damn chick-lit heroines always do this to me and yet I never learn.

She was also HORNY from that 60% onwards.

Which like I get. I miss dick sometimes too girl but sweeeeeet jesuuuus get a grip.

I get that his problem of being "too hot" is not very #relatable but her objectifying him and practically salivating over every inch of skin got really old really damn fast.

In conclusion.

I did enjoy it or tried my goddamn best to at the very least. I love cliches in romance. Lots of people found that the overdone ones that persisted throughout this were less than fun - well to those people I say... fair enough.

BUT

Stuck in an elevator? Oops only 1 bed? Need a fake date to a wedding? One is sick and the other takes care of them?

YES PLEASE MORE.

And that's my very professional review of this literary masterpiece.

Sidenote: was it just me or are all their problems self-created?
