Tara had an unusual childhood growing up in rural Idaho, the child of devout Mormon 'preppers' who were convinced the world would soon end. Tara never went to school and lived in a fairly closed community.
Throughout most of this book I wanted to rescue Tara from her situation, but she didn't need me to because she was very courageous, trusted her instincts and was a survivor. This book gives an insight into some of the dynamics within Mormon families, the unquestioned authority of the patriarch and male children and the all-or-none rules for membership.
I recommend this book for readers who like stories about people (especially women and girls) who overcome adversity and the abuse of family power, and learning to trust and think for themselves.
