I was so excited to read this book because the intersection of fundamentalism and educational neglect is a special interest of mine. However I was disappointed to discover that instead of a reflective text on the effects of education (or the lack thereof), the book was a memoir of all sorts of abuse, neglect, and familial discord. It was a well-written and interesting story, just not what I expected at all. For a text that purports to be centered on education, we hear very little about the texts and ideas (beyond lists of philosophers' names) that actually fascinated the author and made a difference in her thinking.
