Wow, this book is so empowering and inspiring. I loved reading all the flaws each of the characters had and how they overcame them. I loved Jade, and felt for her, and i could really resonate with how she felt about herself, her image, her future, and her aspirations, especially as I too am a young poor black girl trying to figure out how to make it in the world. I even started tearing upwhen Maxine and Jade’s mum were cooking together , i don’t know why, but that really got to me. I just felt so proud of Jade and all her accomplishments . This book is essential for every young black girl to read, to know that they can find their voice in the world, no matter the circumstance.
Graphic: Fatphobia, Racism, and Police brutality
Moderate: Sexual harassment
