“I want you to know, if you ever read this, there was a time when I would rather have had you by my side than any one of these words; I would rather have had you by my side than all the blue in the world."
Bluets is a contemplation of, you guessed it, the colour blue. I've always wondered how people can put a colour to their emotions. How can they put a colour to something as vast and unknowable as sadness? And why is it blue? Is it because we predominantly associate certain blue objects with our sadness? Or is it simply some bullshit scientific neurologic trigger?
Regardless, this book was fantastic. Maggie Nelson starts it off with “Suppose I were to begin by saying that I had fallen in love with a color.” but manages to use it to discuss love, loss, heartbreak and joy. An unusual but definitely worthwhile read.
