Verity by Colleen Hoover
2.0
So I had multiple people recommend this book to me, including people who read thriller/mystery novels. I know there are people who loved it and people who hated it. To me, it was really ridiculous.
I found the first 120 pages or so very boring. There were way too many scenes that were essentially bad erotica. I guess I should’ve expected that because Hoover is a romance writer, and I don’t mind a steamy scene here and there. But I didn’t think every chapter in what’s supposed to be a thriller/mystery needed a graphic sex scene. I also really don’t like romances, I find them boring.
There were also a couple of really bad lines thrown in, “He stilled inside me; staring down at me with those intense green eyes and lashes so black, I expected to taste licorice when I kissed them.” Who is kissing someone on the eye? I know Hoover has a lot of corny lines in her other novels so again, I guess I should’ve expected that.
While the story certainly got better, the “thriller” aspect to the story was just okay. I did start to grow more interested as more things unfolded, such as Verity’s history with her children and whether or not she was faking her illness. But then I got to the end, and it was absolutely ridiculous. It was like Hoover had to throw a plot twist in because everything else was so predictable. It was incredibly stupid. I was actually ready to rate this 3 stars until that horrible ending.
I don’t think thriller is Hoover’s forte, she should stick to the romance books that everyone loves her for. This is really just a good book for someone who just wants to dip their toe into the thriller genre, likes reading about romance/sex, and doesn’t mind a few disturbing scenes. Sorry Verity lovers, it absolutely did not live up to the hype. It’s not the worst book I’ve ever read, but I’ve read a lot better.
