The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
5.0
The first in the LotR trilogy and my favourite book of the three. The story of a journey which, although exciting, stays pretty much on Hobbit-sized scale throughout - the adventure gets much bigger later. That's why I love this book so much. It's like a walking holiday... with orcs and deadly peril.
I'm re-reading LotR this winter. I thought I knew this book well but I'm seeing things I hadn't notice before (or forgotten). Boromir, for example, is SUCH a whiny b!tch! Sam has so much more wisdom & dignity than I remembered too.
